02 - Just Head

    ‘Okay, don’t freak out Berny … I’m sure there are plenty of people who’ve woken up with their head detached … ‘ Bernice consoled herself. She had maneuvered her body into the bathroom, and was getting ready for the school day while her head remained laying on her pillow, her auburn hair curled messily around her head. She had not been willing to move it, in fear that doing so would somehow shatter what little grasp of reality she still had.

    ‘Ok … pros and cons list time. Pros? I can get ready and get a couple more minutes of sleep … Cons? I’m probably never going to be accepted into modern society again, lose all my friends, never be able to get a job … Oh God! I’m a freak!”

    Bernice scanned her room, as there wasn’t much else for a head to do. She looked at her soccer trophies, ‘How am I going to play now?’, at her photos of her grandparents, ‘What are they going to think?’, and the teddy bear she got from her best friend, ‘Will she even want to hang out anymore?’

    Bernice stubbed her toe again. “Ouch!” She was going to have to pay more attention to her body.
